Betaine Hydrochloride with Pepsin from Solgar is a digestive enzyme supplement containing betaine and pepsin to better digest protein-rich foods. Betaine increases the amount of stomach fluids, which are necessary for protein digestion as they stimulate the pancreas to release digestive enzymes.

The hydrochloric acid also ensures the release of the "endogenous factor" necessary for vitamin B12 absorption.

Stomach fluid levels decrease with age and are depleted by the use of anti-inflammatory medications. In the stomach, hydrochloric acid produces pepsin, an enzyme absolutely necessary for breaking down protein into smaller, more absorbable fragments.
